February Journal: Sourcing Vintage

Welcome to our February Journal! This month, we’re taking you antiquing with us and giving you the low-down on how we source vintage and what we look for when shopping. In our Design Forecast, we noted that we are continuing to see the use of heirloom, antique, and vintage pieces in the home. Not only is sourcing vintage a practice in sustainability, but taking the time to source such one-of-a-kind pieces can make a space truly unique and help a home feel more personalized.

When you walk into an antique store uncertain of what you are looking for, it can be very overwhelming and often overstimulating if it’s not well organized. Here are three key design elements we always keep in mind and search for when sourcing vintage.

Timeless Finishes

Timeless and honest finishes are a must when sourcing vintage. We are particularly drawn to solid, natural wood pieces such as unpainted oak, pine, or walnut. Many newly manufactured furniture pieces are constructed of wood veneer, but investing in solid wood furniture will not only be more durable but also feel more luxurious.

To soften things up, we also keep an eye out for heritage fabrics, upholstery, and pillows. Coveted velvet details or embroidered patterns are a perfect way to add character, texture, and personality to a room.

Casegoods

What better way to make a statement in a room than a vintage casegood? A casegood is typically any furniture that provides interior storage space from a hutch or buffet table to an armoire. When looking for the perfect piece, we usually consider their construction, wood finish, joinery details, and hardware. Larger casegoods, new or antique, are usually not inexpensive so make sure they have a high level of quality and craftsmanship under the surface.

Unique Décor

Last but certainly not least, we always keep our eyes peeled for unique home décor. Rugs, lighting, tabletop accessories, candles, serveware, and art are just a few examples of items we love to source vintage if possible. These small but mighty items can help bring a home to life, especially when mixing with new pieces. Styling with brass and silver accents help highlight shelving and tabletops. Adding a vintage oil painting or handloomed rug to a room adds texture and depth. Finally, incorporating antique lighting is a great way to make your home feel warm and inviting.
