December Journal: Let’s Get Cozy

Welcome to our December Journal! As the last leaves fall and our heaters come on, we're always looking for ways to make our home feel warm and inviting. 'Tis the season to spend time under the roof with family, friends, and a cup of hot cocoa. This month, we're bringing you three simple ways to make your home feel cozy. We're talking about "The Holiday" aesthetics all winter long, so let's get into it!

The first way to make your home feel cozy during the cooler months is accent or mood lighting. We cannot emphasize this enough. This means floor lamps, table lamps, even sconces. Table lamps are a great way to adorn side tables, console tables, and nightstands. Adding sconces in a hallway, bedroom, or living area can also give your home an atmospheric glow. Dim your overhead lights, turn on the lamps, and you will notice a huge difference in warmth. Typically, you want these fixtures to fall in a color temperature range of 2700-3000k, creating a warm and welcoming radiance. Too cool a bulb and your home will lose that sense of cozy we are striving for.

The next order of business is layering and adding texture. Pull out those knit blankets, throws, and pillows to add layers and depth to your beds, sofas, and side chairs. We love a chunky woven blanket that feels like soft, warm hug and adds so much character to a room. It's a win win. Fur throws such as a sheepskin can also be a great piece to rest on a bench, sofa arm, or back of a chair.  Layering should extend beyond soft goods and rugs, to your tabletop and shelving décor. Adding groups of items and layering these pieces can create visual depth and thoughtfulness to a home.

Lastly, to create that hygge atmosphere we love so much you need to reach all the senses. We're taking about candles, real pine and florals, fire crackling, and galettes baking. When it comes to candles, we love adding scentless candlesticks to any room to give it a warm glow. Even a subtle scent that is not overwhelming and can burn for hours (without giving anyone a migraine) can be a meaningful touch. Want your home to smell like pine? Add a few real branches to a mantle or tabletop. Cinnamon? Let's bake! We're all for creating a natural aesthetic and coziness that lasts through till the next season.
