August Journal: Seasonal Décor
Welcome to our August Journal! This month, as fall lovers are on the cusp of what we consider to be the best season of the year, autumnal décor begins to take the place of summer linens and tableware on retailers’ shelves. However, when it comes to seasonal décor and the extent to which a home should vary seasonally, we tend to favor the good old saying “Less is more”. For us, it’s about a slight shift in the mood and the feeling you get when you enter a home, rather than being smacked in the face with a cinnamon broom the moment you walk in.
Let’s talk about some ways to achieve this…
Making The Transition
From season to season, it’s impractical to swap out larger items such as furnishings so we tend to focus on smaller items such as linens, décor, and artwork. Swapping out that light linen throw on the sofa for a heavier quilt or knit blanket, changing the bedding to a darker color and adding more layers, or switching a summery piece of artwork for one that is more muted and tonal are all examples of ways to ease out of summer and into autumn.
We aim to avoid any décor that truly gives away the season in an obvious manor. Yes, it’s fall, we don’t need a pumpkin and skeleton on the shelf to remind us. Again, we want to emphasize the importance of being subtle and sophisticated with your decorative changes. These changes are meant to quietly address a new season aesthetically and functionally.
Use Your Senses
Seasonal décor is not all about the tactile pieces in your home, so let’s go even further and talk about the senses. Want your home to feel cozier this season? Try turning off any overhead lights and simply work with decorative lighting such as lamps and sconces or perhaps lighting a candle. When it comes to candles, we love adding scentless candlesticks to any room to give it a warm glow. Even a subtle scent that is not overwhelming and can burn for hours (without giving anyone a migraine) can be a meaningful touch. Want your home to smell like cinnamon? Ditch the broom and let's bake!
Nature’s Calling
Looking for the simplest way to change your home throughout the year? Look no further than the addition of seasonal florals and greenery. Gone are the lively summer florals, say hello to draping tonal arrangements, moody branches and grasses, and heavier vases. We're all for creating a natural aesthetic and coziness with seasonal décor that’s sure to warm your home.
