April Journal: Curb Appeal

Welcome to our April Journal! This month, we want to talk about curb appeal. Spring is just underway, and it feels like everything is finally coming back to life. We’ve been stuck inside all winter, done our spring cleaning, and now it’s time to step outside, take a deep breath, and look around. Is your home lacking curb appeal? Has the paint faded, and your lighting tarnished? Regardless of whether you are thinking about selling your home or it’s your forever place, keeping up with your home’s exterior appearance is important!

Keep reading for 5 ways you can elevate your home’s curb appeal this season…

#1- Paint. A fresh coat of paint is our number one recommendation. Not only does it liven and beautify the appearance, but painting can also protect your home from various elements like weather, moisture, and UV rays, increasing your home’s lifespan. Not up to painting your entire exterior this year? Consider a new color or touch up the paint on your doors, trim, and shutters!

#2- Lighting and hardware. While exterior lighting and hardware are small elements in the scheme of a home’s exterior, they can be very impactful. When someone approaches your home, the very first thing they physically encounter is your door hardware. Selecting hardware that elevates your front door is a relatively inexpensive way to upgrade your entry. In addition, adding architectural lighting such as lanterns is a great way to accessorize your home in a functional manor. These are the essential accessories to your home.

#3- Hardscape. When we refer to hardscape, we’re talking about your driveway, front walk, garden edging, or even gravel used to define areas. The key phrase here being “define areas”. Defining your walkway from your yard and even any seating area or landscaped area, will make the appearance of your home more manicured. Hardscapes are often overlooked but can add much character and value to a home’s curb appeal.

#4- Landscape. We’re all familiar with this one, but it’s non-negotiable. From hedges to trees and flowers, to freshly cut lawns, landscaping a must. Even natural landscaping or xeriscaping needs to be maintained, and spring is the best time to roll up your sleeves (or hire someone) and do just that!

#5- Roof and gutters. We’re getting into the pricier ticket items here, but they are of equal importance in making a good first impression. If you’re not in the business of getting a brand-new roof this year, even a clean or power wash can work wonders. If you’re looking to splurge, we’re always a fan of wood or slate shingles, depending on the architectural style of your home. Adding copper gutters or metal awnings can be a welcoming touch and add depth and dimension to your facade!
